Ah…The memories that this image evokes. Tikam. Playing under the house with the neighbours’ kids. Tok Tok Candy. Kites. Gasing. Best pulut hitam sold by a wandering old lady. A much simpler life that I thought I had forgotten.
I wish the whole of Terengganu was like that. Having grown up in the city has left me with no ‘kampung’ to go back to during the major festivals & this leaves me with the desire to go to all the rural & remote areas to see what people talk about. I had my first taste of touching & handling chickens in my friend’s poultry farm in Tangkak two years ago…! Yay!

Looks like a lovely house that has seen better days. It has so much more character than the “boxes” that we dwell in today. Thanks for the photo Pummkin. The moment I saw this, my mind shifted back in time to the house my father grew up in. That house is gone now but the memory lingers on. (27/9/05)
tikam?! havent heard that in ages…i Love tikam. and guli, daun terup, kari masak (got forced to play by sis and cute neighbour gal), help kak tipah make dodol during raya, ais krim potong, catching dragon flies with lidi and ciku sap to feed chicken….haiyaa, miss kampung life. btw, u were right pummkin, looks better in sepia than b/w. cool shot! Eh??? {{*lost*}} What’s tikam??? And daun terup??? {{*very lost*}} I remember Tok Tok Candy, Say Leng!!! I loved it when the old man chisel the candy off his big round tin…! I wonder if any of that is still available now. Maybe in Petaling Street???
Say Leng
wah some more memories came back. dau terup and guli and of course the grasshoppers and spiders in matchboxes. tikam is the paper loteri thing hanging in the sundry shops. pick the right piece and you win sweets or some small toys. errr… not sure if i got it right about the daun though. if not mistaken, its a card game. or rather i associate it with a card game played by older ladies. long narrow looking cards. sadly haven’t seen tok tok old men around anymore.

I remember tikam!! Used to sneak out from my granpa’s place in Taiping and its like an addiction .. hoping to land the biggie until ur moolah runs out. Guli ah? Now only find it as decorations in vases and aquariums. Used to be our treasured booty from the spoils of our conquests 😉 Tok Tok guy? I think there’s one near Petlaing St. In front of the Popular Book Store. No tikam there though.
